Eletelephony
Once there was an elephant
Who tried to use the telephant.
No! no! I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone–
(Dear me. I am not certain quite
That even now I've got it right.)
How e'er it was, he got his trunk
Entangled in the telephunk.
The more he tried to get it free
The louder buzzed the telephee.
I fear I better drop the song
of elephop and telephong!

This was one of my absolutely favorite poems as a kid! I started laughing as soon as I read the first line and remembered it.
ReplyDeleteHey Carol, Guido has you on his podcast!

HeeHee! That was a cute one.
ReplyDeleteTheresa, that was one of my favorites too! My book had a silly illustration of an elephant tangled up in a telephone cord. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten about that one! Fits of giggles always followed!
ReplyDeleteThe poem is excellent, but I like the post title even better.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I just came from reading a half-dozen really deeeep poems, and then came to this. So thanks. I needed that! *smooch*
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blast from the past. It actually made me think of my favorite poem book as a kid--heck, maybe even now--Shel Silverstein. He had some funny stuff too!
ReplyDeleteBest poem of the day. Yay!
ReplyDeleteOK, so why can I STILL recite this at top speed, but can't find my car keys? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAwww....I remember loving that when I was little! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI memorized and read that one when I was six for public speaking. Do elementary schools still do that anymore?
