Seasonal weather

This week I scraped ice off my windshield with a pancake turner.

I then learned that Target has no ice scrapers for sale, but you can choose from an astonishing selection of wading pools and squirt guns in their "Seasonal" section.

  1. Yup, thats about right. Last summer we went to the beach in August, and I couldn't find sunscreen and sand toys at Target & the like, but if you were looking to decorate for Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas- you were in luck.

  2. Try looking at a gas station/convenience store for a scraper. They seem to be more in tune with what people need now, as opposed to 6 months from now.

I think there's a black hole that eats window scraper/brushes. It developed after I had kids! Some of the brushes get spit back out of the black hole in random places in the yard after the snow melts.

My oldest son was born on Valentine's Day. Try buying winter supplies for your baby in late winter! Damned annoying.

Last February, I tried to buy mittens for my nephew who was comint to visit me in MN from Texas. There were only shorts and swimsuits in Target. It was 10 degrees outside. The woman I asked to help me actually lectured me, telling me I should have bought them on sales after Christmas, like I was a bad mother. I was not very pleasant to her. I went to a local hardware/home stuff store and found piles of mittens. Also, ice scrapers. Good luck. It is -7 here in MN this am.

  4. Well when you find one, are you going to knit that ice-scraper-hand-cozy from that book you reviewed? ;-)

Yes - I observed this phenomenom yesterday, also in Target. A man was asking a store clerk where the gloves were located. He was told that Target had none. It's about 13 degrees outside right now, and Target has no gloves. They have plenty of bathing suits and beach bags though.

  6. The whole retail ahead thing drives me nuts. I can't think about summer when it's -17C out!

  7. Oh excellent...I should have no difficulty finding SPF30 Sunscreen for my Cancun vacation.

I've always found that credit cards come in handy when I can't find an ice scraper. Now if someone would only design a credit card/ice scraper cozy, I'd be all set.

  8. The kids and I discovered the same thing yesterday when Rosebud decided that she needed gloves, not mittens (as they are for babies).

    We went to Rite Aid.

Here in Ontario, we can buy anti-freeze and ice scrapers at our grocery stores.

Mine has had a lot of use this week.

    Did you try W@lm@rt?

As I recall from my misspent days in the frigid north, a credit card makes a great windshield scraper. Best of all, use one of those that arrive unannounced in the mail - it's a fitting end for them! VBG!

I feel I should mention that credit cards make good scrapers, since only two people (so far) have said it.

You know, this out of season marketing, while unpleasant, has been going on for my entire lifetime.
At NY Fashion Week, what they're showing is Autumn 2007.
    This week.
Stupid, but that's the way it is.

HOW DARE YOU post another winter-themed blog entry when you have readers in the Southern Hemisphere!

This Northern Hemispheric-Centric Hegemony is deeply disturbing and must stop. What atrocity is next? A post about clockwise drain flow? [Which, by the way, is a myth.]

Too right, Tom. Enough of this geographicist behavior.

  14. Hey, Tom, you sound hot. What are you wearing?

  15. Hey, Caro! What does Go Knit in Your Hat really mean? And what kind of undies do you wear when you're not having sex?

    Just askin'.

In lieu of an ice scraper, I have used a flatware knife, my nails (they're tough), and yes, a knitting needle.

I'm going over to Tar-jay immediately to stock up on Hallowe'en candy before it's too late.

  16. Hey Mar: (1) Go Knit In Your Hat is Polish for "bite me." AND
    (2) Underwear?

Just one more anecdote for the pile: when my husband and I first moved to northern California it was the middle of the rainy season. And there were no raincoats.

I used to use the old AOL CD's to scrape the windshield. Worked nicely and I always seemed to have one somewhere.

Try finding a snowblower in January in Idaho, we got the last one at ACE. That's just wrong.
