Another knitter is born

Incentivized by her "Learn to Knit with Harris the Bear" kit, a thoughtful present from Mom and Dad, Miss Thang learns to knit.

Partial transcript follows (maternal profanity sanitized for your protection):

M.T.: Mom, when I can I do it?
Me: I have to show you what to do, or else how will you know what to do?
M.T.: Hurry up.
Me (demonstrating): See how it goes in, around, through and off?
M.T.: In, around, through and off. I KNOW, Mommy.
Me: Okay, give it a try. In, aro---
M.T.: I KNOW. Through and OFF! Do you think I'm dumb, Mommy?

15 minutes later.

M.T.: MOMMY! Why is this so tight?
Me: Let me take a look.
M.T.: Why did you give me knitting with extra-tight stitches? Did you purposely make them tight so I couldn't do it?
Me: Don't be silly. [Fixes knitting and goes to visit bathroom]

3 minutes later.

M.T. [at the top of her lungs]: MOMMY! MOMMY! I NEED YOU! MOMMY!!!

Me (rushing downstairs half-clothed, ready to call 911): What?! Are you okay?

M.T.: I need you to help me with my knitting. There are too many loops.

Each one, teach one, so the teached one, can kvetch some...

  1. I would still like to know - why DID you give her knitting with extra-tight stitches???? What kind of mother does such a thing??

I love this - and it's great that she wants to get it right.

  2. Congratulations on another knitting child! Don't you wonder what the transcript of our mothers teaching us would have been?

The best part about being a well-seasoned knitter is the forgetfulness of our beginning foibles.

I recommend some nice sherry for the teacher.

LMAO Ohh... the years of long-suffering deep sighs I see for you during her teenage years. She's going to be a firecracker, that one. :P

But just think, if it takes, you'll have a yarn buddy in the house. You can go to wool festivals together!

Oh dear. That is why someone else will teach my daughter- I could probably handle the boys, but not her. There's just not enough wine in the world. (on the other hand, the amount of whine...)

now if only N would learn to knit...then all 4 of you could come to the SnK group meeting!

happy new year (and new knitters) to you!

  7. Ah yes. I too have often complained that there are just too many loops.

    Hehehe,,,,

Awhile ago I noticed my stepdaughter knitting in a different way than I taught her so I asked her how come she said: oh I know how to do it your way too but it is so boring,,,!
She is almost grown up now, 20,,,
I taught her a few years ago.
    So, prepare yourself :)
