This just in. . .
Did you know that "[k]nitting blogs are the estrogen-fueled, crafty-fingered appendix of the blogosphere: surprisingly large once you take a look at them, yet hardly noticeable to anyone but the busy bacteria that hang out there"? Hmm, I'm not sure I like that uncannily accurate description (especially coming from "The A.V. Club" -- which I guess is written by people who watch a lot of teevee but aren't quite funny enough for The Onion?), but at least the authors pay homage to the Yarn Harlot. (Thanks, Mr. G-K-I-Y-H!)

Of course the A.V. geek surely hasn't read your blog, or the language might have been a lot less generalizing.
The woman who wrote that bit admitted to being its author on Ravelry, in this post. Says she agonized how to sum up the vastness of knitting blogs in such a small number of words.
"crafty-fingered appendix"? what happens when I burst; do I need an appendectomy?
"estrogen-fueled" - I beg to differ, but ted and lars and dr. mel and dave and sean, etc. might have a few words to say about THAT!
PS - word is "malicare"; a new govt. program to suppliment medicare?

Busy bacteria????? Definite umbrage at that one.
Yikes. First, I do take offense to the 'bacteria' reference. Second, I think the word they wanted was appendage, not appendix. Doesn't anyone have an editor? And even that word has negative connotations. The problem with summing a large group of people up in a couple sentences is that it really can't be done. Was this comment too grumpy? Off for more coffee....
Actually, I always like a biological reference, especially one that might remind us of how dependent we are on the bacteria in our guts. And I like the appendix idea - suggests that the blogosphere is a big colon and the knitting blogosphere is an off-the-beaten-track spot. And by this analogy, all blog writers and readers are bacteria. (The writer does need to rethink the specific hormones, though, as other commenters have pointed out.)

Excuse me, "estrogen fueled"? I've got bigger and more brassy ones than a lot of men out there (not all). Also, the hormone assumption is a huge insult to many skilled gentlemen out there (Lars, Ted, Joe, Alan, Sean, Mel to name a few), as well as my 8 year-old son who is knitting a neck warmer for his girlfriend. So there! :-)

Eh, whatever. I'm used to being misunderstood and dissed. I never WAS one of the "cool kids," if I became one the Universe would probably explode from the wrong-ness of it all.
